“The only folks I ever saw were from Veterans for Bernie” | New York Times, Oct. 10, 2018

VFB National — Today, New York Times Magazine headlined, “Democrats Are Ignoring One Key Voting Group: Veterans,” a painful reminder of our last two years of organizing work at Veterans for Bernie.

“NYT: Democrats Are Ignoring One Key Voting Group: Veterans”

In it, GOP Operative Bob Carey, leader of the Republican effort to connect with Veterans, remarked that “The only folks I ever saw were from Veterans for Bernie, and that was twice.”

Bernie Sanders, of course, did not ignore Veterans. Only the Democratic party did that, once it finally succeeded in pushing him (and us) aside. (Don’t worry, we still voted Hillary)

Rather, Sanders made veterans outreach a priority of his multifaceted people’s campaign, and Vets for Bernie was there for every moment.

In March 2016, the Independent progressive Senator held a national conference call on Veterans’ Issues with Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, Col. Gordon Sumner, and Vets for Bernie founder, Tyson Manker, a former Marine Corps combat veteran.

Later, Sanders staged a military rally in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania where he outlined a bold foreign policy strategy to hold hostile actors accountable, and rethink our alliances with questionable nations like Saudi Arabia and Qatar. The Vermont Senator also outlined his strategies for tackling Veterans care, an important subject for many of the veterans attendees, many who traveled long distances for the event.

Before the rally, Sen. Sanders met with a group of Veterans, including gold star mother Celeste Zappala, who showed the Senator a picture of her son, Sherwood Baker, who was killed in Iraq war, which remains ongoing after more than 15 years. The meeting lasted for more than an hour, and veteran shared their experiences, along with ideas for change.

Sanders somehow even managed to pay his respects to the fallen at Gettysburg.

Vets for Bernie highlighted the massive military support for the beloved Senator in various viral articles.

Who Are Bernie Sanders’ Top Contributors? Active Duty Army, Navy, & Air Force, That’s Who

We told you that our Veterans Organizations awarded Sen. Sanders their highest honors because of his leadership on our behalf.

And of course, we were out here, trying to engage in honest democracy after having served our nation at war. But the media shut us out.

They ignored our Veterans for Bernie signs, because they refused to show our support for Sen. Sanders.

And guess what our budget was..?

Zero friggin dollars.

Just tens of thousands of motivated military veterans fighting for the candidate they know will fight for what the America we fought for and believe in.

Bernie Sanders.
