NATIONAL (VFB) — Immediately upon entering the race for President, Senator Bernie Sanders has surged to frontrunner status by raising a record $1.2 million in donations (and counting) within 4 hours of his candidacy announcement.
Only one other candidate compares to Sanders, California Senator Kamala Harris, who raised $1.5 million within 24 hours of her announcement. But in an announcement just after noon Eastern Time, the 2016 candidate announced that an additional quarter million 250,000 people have signed on to his campaign in support, 42,000 of them as donors. Such eye-popping numbers indicate strong base support that will make the Vermont Senator tough to beat in 2020.

Noteworthy is Sanders’ grassroots network, due in part to his rejection of PAC and corporate money, which unsurprisingly fuels his popularity with people of all backgrounds. Bernie boasts an email and donor list that all rivals will have difficulty matching.
Perhaps the biggest thing that too often goes understated about Bernie Sanders is who he is accountable to.
Only 3% of Sanders' campaign contributions in 2016 came from amounts over $100k, compared to 40% for Trump and 47% for Clinton.
